Jiggers project with Suzy, office help and Pres. Mar 19 2016 near Jinja!

Another great bike load near our apartment. Too many to even fit
on his bike. We could see he was struggling to keep it balanced
as he pushed it uphill!

It's a Saturday and we arrived at this school somewhere in the
Jinja area to do Jiggers on these kids feet. They all look happy
and like they are not even bothered by the jiggers. Sometimes
the jiggers get so bad that the kids can't walk and go to school.

Always interested in checking out the new Muzungus in the area.

Inside the school we are getting set up and ready. S Chatfield,
Suzy, Anne and S Goodwin.

More for another picture. S Goodwin, S Howard, Anne, Suzy,
Diana and Sarah. All wonderful sisters here to lend a hand.

We see things drawn like this on most of the schools. And often
outside we will see hand-lettered signs with good thoughts.

This is Godfrey, our driver and handyman. He is a life saver in lots
of areas. In red behind him, E Gillett, Sean Goodwin (visiting
his folks from Utah) E Howard and the Headteacher. Please
notice Godfrey's fancy hat!!

Wash stations all set up. S Chatfield, S Gillett, and S Howard
ready for our first customers. After we clean the kids feet in the
tubs of water, they go to the ladies behind me and have the
jiggers cut out with a razor blade. Everyone had on plastic gloves.

Lots of kids waiting and the ones in front have received a hygiene
kits for good behavior. Also, some received  new shoes, socks,
underpants, and maybe a Tshirt.

Left to right: Godfrey, Sean, E Goodwin and Libby (Pres and S
Chatfield's daughter, also visiting from Utah)

Too bad I was not standing in front of Pres Chatfield. I would
got a pic of him laughing!! The men used some kind of insecticide
and sprayed the inside of all the homes in the area. They all have
dirt floors.

Suzy giving final instructions.

E Howard and E Wilson clean the wounds with hydrogen peroxide
after they have had jiggers cut out. Then end with an antibacterial
application.

Maybe E Wilson will grow up to be a doctor. He is enjoying this!

E Howard is very careful. But this made some kids cry.

This old mama kept everyone in order. She has a stick she is using
to tap and point. (and maybe smack the unruly ones)

S Howard and her oldest patient. A boy named Abdul. He is 11
1/2 years old and made me think of Alex.

Now we see her stick! She was lovely and kept the kids in order.
We finally started about 10:30 A.M. And did not finish until
almost 2:30 P.M. We did 100 pairs of feet and will go back
in a couple of weeks to do that many again!

Latrines getting built, desks approved and interesting pictures along the way! March 2016

Almost finished latrine at maternity health clinic.

Still need terrazzo done inside, Clean up needed around outside
and water tank for washing.

S Howard inspecting the back.

Foundation is almost built for latrine at Lake View Primary
School in Jinja.
This man is carrying a load of grass for his cattle. We see this
frequently. Most often they just move the cattle to the green
grass. But sometimes they take the grass home.

A bike load of grass for cattle. He is still peddling!
2 Bike loads of grass. Every Sunday as we drive to church we
pass 2 loads of grass. We have talked and wonder if it is the
same 2 guys each week. Must be!

proposed borehole site in Mukono District.

DWO (district water officer) and secretary went with us.

I have found some new friends. Everyone likes their picture taken!

More young workers at Akim's welding shop.

A young boy (14 years old) is painting this metal trunk and kept
hiding from me as I tried to take his picture! He is hunkered
down waiting for me to give up!

I did finally get his picture as he worked on something else.
The kids all use metal trunks to take everything in when
they go off to school.

Another bike load, matoke. The green bananas. No room to peddle!
Probably too heavy besides.

Photos along Bombo Road, a new project of school desks, and 3 boreholes in Kayunga Feb 2016

As we wait in a traffic jam on Bombo Rd we see a bike load of
lumber. Somehow he manages to get thru! Looks heavy! We
are on our way to Semutu to see about 800 school desks.

Further along the road we start to have a market, which adds
to the congestion.

Selling a little bit of everything. Whatever you need!

The green in front is matoke, green bananas. Everyones favorite!

Water is Life! We are behind a water truck.

School has started here but not everyone has shown up for the
first week. Elections are still happening and perhaps that is
the reason for such few students.

Just one student in this classroom, but not any teacher here either.

A few more in here, but still no teacher. They do seem to be busy
on something.

This is a bike shop we pass along the road.

Maybe a few customers are here.

We could not resist this nice looking hotel!  Let us know if anybody
is coming and we can make a reservation!  :)

The first site in Kayunga. This is the only water supply and they
need a new borehole with pump! This is very slow and shallow
so the water is easily contaminated.

All the school kids came to check out the Muzungus.

E Howard talking with the men in charge. Godfrey (our contractor)
and Martin rode out with us. Martin has been a big help in motivating
the villages to come up with the deposit. 10%

S Howard, school kids and some moms. Everyone likes their
pic taken!

We happened to arrive right at lunch time! Cooked fresh, right
at school. a nice warm helping of posho! Everyone loves this!!
E Howard ordered it on accident at a restaurant and did not
enjoy it. I don't think he even tasted it!

I think she is giving out a chunk of sugarcane.

Lots of kids ride their bikes to school. In fact, bikes are the most
common form of transportation.

More students in attendance here.
This is the school where we showed a hand count of who would
support new water. Almost everyone raised their hand, some even
raised both hands! The woman told us that they have to travel a
bit to get to the borehole and then wait in line for 2 1/2 hours.
An all day process!

Close up of the bikes.

We are now at the catholic school and church.

They need a borehole for the whole village nearby.

We walked down to their water supply.

Just the runoff from the hills. Does not look especially clean!
